SUMMARY:Creative Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:With Monica Peters. \nCapture the micro and the macro details of nature journaling while exploring Atawhai Whenua\, the reserve between Oneroa and Matiatia. Only a few decades ago\, this part of Waiheke was a barren\, eroding hillside that ended in a waterlogged paddock. Thanks to community effort\, it’s now a thriving forest and wetland. \nThe workshop begins at Waiheke Learning\, looking at how artists and travellers have documented their experiences in nature. From there\, participants will stroll to Atawhai Whenua for a series of guided\, fun drawing exercises. Using a range of drawing materials\, the group will explore mark-making—sketching grand vistas\, recording sensory impressions\, and noticing the reserve’s intricate details. \nAlongside creative nature journaling\, the workshop also offers insights into ecological restoration on Waiheke\, and introduces some of the plants and animals that live in Atawhai Whenua. \nWhat to bring and logistics\nWear comfortable walking shoes and bring sun and wind protection appropriate to the weather. Bring a notebook or journal\, and a clipboard if you have one. \nThe walk follows formed paths through the forest but includes some uneven or potentially slippery sections. The total distance is approximately 2 km\, from Waiheke Learning through Atawhai Whenua and down to Matiatia. \nBuses are available from Matiatia back to Waiheke Learning\, or participants can walk back (approximately 20 minutes).
