As part of the ‘ONEPŪ – Shifting Sands / Shifting Time’ exhibition at the Franklin Arts Centre, join this unique, hands-on experience exploring the traditional methods of using harakeke. All materials will be provided, but if you have extra time in the morning, there is also the option to harvest your own harakeke!
Harakeke gathering at Auckland Botanic Gardens (9am – 10am)
Participants have the option to meet before the harakeke fibre workshop to harvest their own harakeke, to use during the workshop back at Franklin Arts Centre.
8.45am: Meet us at the main entrance of the Auckland Botanic Gardens to walk to the Pa Harakeke (harakeke plantation)
9am – 10am: Harvesting harakeke
THEN
Harakeke Fibre Workshop at Franklin Arts Centre (11am – 1pm)
Head to the Wētā Room at Franklin Arts Centre where Michelle Mayn will lead a hands-on harakeke fibre workshop. You will get to explore the textile methods of binding, knotting and cordage making using muka (processed harakeke fibres). All materials provided.
