SUMMARY:Whau Kayak Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of community\, conservation\, and creativity along Te Whau Pathway.  \n🚣 On the Awa – Explore Te Whau by kayak with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks. Learn about waterway protection\, observe local wildlife\, and help keep the awa clean by removing rubbish.  \n🌿 On the Land – Drop in throughout the afternoon for nature-based workshops with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and Whau the People. Try your hand at raranga (weaving)\, engage in freshwater monitoring\, and create art inspired by the natural world.  \nCome along and connect with te taiao\, our environment\, through hands-on activities that celebrate and protect our shared spaces.  \nTe Whau Pathway Project is partnering with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust\, Auckland Sea Kayaks and Whau the People to deliver this event.  \nThis event is proudly supported by the New Zealand Government and Te Whau Pathway Project; Foundation North and Auckland Council.  \nTe Whau Pathway is a shared path that will one day connect the Waitematā and Manukau harbours.    \nThe pathway will provide the opportunity for amazing recreational choices and safer and more sustainable alternatives for travel. Nurturing a sense of pride\, ownership and kaitiakitanga of the Whau River\, one of the jewels in West Auckland’s crown.  \nTe Whau Pathway connecting communities\, nature\, and the awa. \n  \nRegistrations are essential with limited kayaks available\, follow the link. \nPlease only register for the kayaking if you can commit to the full 4hr timeslot\, expect to spend 1.5hrs kayaking and unlimited time on land. \nChildren younger than 10 will not be able to participate in the kayaking activity but children 5 and up can participate in the nature art\, weaving and freshwater workshops. \nChildren aged 10-13 need to have a confident adult in the back of their kayak. Children under 16 need an adult companion. \nPrior kayak experience and swimming ability is required for the kayaking activity. \nPlease note that the maximum weight for the sea kayaks is 120kg per person. \nPlease arrive at least 15 mins prior and check in at the tent. If you are running late please txt/call Sophie on 0226312410 \nWhat to bring: \nGloves\, Clothing suitable for kayaking (no jeans)\, Footwear you do not mind getting wet and muddy\, Water bottle\, Rain coat\, Hat\, and sun glasses and sunblock \nWhat will be provided: \nDouble sit on top kayaks\, Life Jackets/ PFD\, Paddle\, Rubbish bags\, Rubbish pickers\, H and S equipment\, Kayak instructors\, Light snacks and hot drinks\, Art and weaving supplies\, and Freshwater monitoring equipment \n  \nIf you are feeling unwell (sore throat\, running nose\, loss of taste/smell) please let us know prior as soon as possible. You will not be able to attend the event. \nThere are activities on the shore for anyone who can not go on a kayak. \nCancellation policy: If you give less than 24 hrs notice when cancelling your registration or you no show without a valid excuse (i.e COVID\, or other illness/emergency) then you may be sent an invoice of $20 per person. This is to ensure spaces do not go to waste and that people do not miss out on attending.
