SUMMARY:Moth Plant Competition - Henderson-Massey
DESCRIPTION:Henderson-Massey Moth Plant Competition Sunday 15th March – Sunday 3rd May 2026 \nThe Henderson-Massey Moth Plant Competition is a fun\, family-friendly competition that is all about getting rid of moth plant in your neighbourhood. \nThere are over $1000 worth of prizes for teams collecting pods and removing vines\, and individuals designing posters. \nTo enter\, you or at least one of your team members has to live\, work or go to school in the Henderson-Massey Local Board area. Register your team now \nMoth plant is a highly invasive pest plant which threatens and smothers our native biodiversity. Each pod contains up to a thousand seeds\, which can germinate in established forest and streamside plantings a long way from the seed source. Then it gets right into the canopy and smothers and kills plants\, preventing the establishment of natives. \nThere’s lots of great information on the Auckland Council and Weedbusters websites. \nMoth plant pods are just about ready to pop during autumn\, and every pod you remove during the competition will help stop the spread. \nHelp your local community to control this pest plant so our backyards can thrive.

SUMMARY:Moth Plant Pod Competition 2026 - Howick
DESCRIPTION:The Howick Moth Plant Competition 2026\, led by Pest Free Howick\, is back for another year — and the community is once again invited to take action for te taiao. \nRunning from 2 March to 8 May 2026\, the competition challenges participants to help control moth plant\, one of Auckland’s most damaging invasive vines. By removing moth plant pods and seedlings\, participants directly protect native plants\, reduce future spread\, and support healthier ecosystems across the Howick area. \nThere are three competition categories: \n\n\nECE – early childhood centres enter as a whole \n\n\nSchools – primary and secondary schools enter as a whole \n\n\nCommunity – open to community teams of up to 10 people \n\n\nParticipants earn points by safely collecting moth plant pods and seedlings\, with all efforts contributing to a collective impact far greater than any one group could achieve alone. Along the way\, competitors learn how to identify moth plant\, understand why it’s a threat\, and see how small actions can lead to meaningful environmental change. \nWith $5\,000 in prizes up for grabs\, the competition is designed to be fun\, educational\, and empowering — turning weed control into a shared challenge that brings people together while making a real difference for native biodiversity in Howick.

SUMMARY:Ngakinga Natural Dye Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Step into the garden and watch plants turn into colour! This workshop takes you from growing and harvesting dye plants\, to mordanting fabric\, to making a dye bath\, and finally transforming fibre into beautiful\, unique hues. \nIt’s playful\, unstructured\, and hands-on—participants are invited to explore\, experiment\, and learn through doing and getting messy. \nWhat You’ll Do\n\n\nHarvest flowers and dye plants from the garden 🌸 \n\n\nPrepare a bubbling\, colourful dye bath together \n\n\nDip\, swirl\, and watch fabric magically change colour 🎨 \n\n\nExplore\, play\, and make one-of-a-kind pieces \n\n\nEvery piece is a surprise—and every participant is an artist! \nFabric\nSome fabric will be supplied\, but you’re welcome to bring your own small-ish piece. \nIf bringing your own: \n\n\nIt must be a natural fibre (cotton\, linen\, silk\, wool\, etc.) \n\n\nOld favourites work perfectly: t-shirts\, tea towels\, or tank tops \n\n\nScour it at home: wash in hot water with soda ash or natural detergent and rinse well \n\n\nPractical Info\n\n\nAll ages welcome 🌱 \n\n\nLocation: Papa ki Awataha | Jessie Tonar Scout Reserve ~ directions here! (end of Kaka Street\, Northcote) \n\n\nThis is all outdoors\, so bring covered shoes\, sun protection\, and a drink bottle \n\n\nCome ready to get your hands colourful and messy! \n\n\n  \nAbout Ngakinga\nArtist Holli McEntegart has collaborated with Charmaine Bailie (Te Uri o Hau – Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara) to grow a natural dye garden on a 200-square-metre site at Papa ki Awataha—the home of the puna that feeds Te Awataha. \nNgakinga is a living sculpture garden\, growing plants chosen for their dyeing magic. Here\, native and introduced species mix\, honouring Indigenous knowledge and celebrating colour-making traditions. \nIt’s a space to gather\, reflect\, and create across seasons—with your feet in the soil\, your hands in flowers\, and your imagination running wild. We explore decolonisation\, ecosystem regeneration\, sustainable practice\, and connection to whenua\, all while turning plants into art. \nAt Northart Gallery\, a parallel installation will feature hand-dyed banners tracing the Inhabit project’s journey through its first three iterations. Find the EcoFest listing for this exhibition here. \n\nNgaHuru Celebration – 29 March\nThe event on the 29th of March will not be a workshop session\, but a lively outdoor celebration of NgaHuru (Autumn). SUMMARY:Bike the Sustainable Garden Trail
DESCRIPTION:What better way to visit sustainable gardens than by sustainable transport? Bike Eastern Suburbs has partnered with The Eastern Bays Sustainable Garden Trail and Bionic Bikes to organise a bike tour around the Eastern Bays Sustainable Garden Trail. \nSuitable for both human-powered and e-bikes\, the tour will be about 20km and take around three or so hours. The route will be partly on urban roads\, and there are quite a few hills involved. \nBionic Bikes is opening up early and has a special price for people who would like to rent a bike for the trip and book directly with them beforehand. \nWe will be meeting at Bionic Bikes (244 Orakei Rd) at 9.30. If you want to hire a bike\, please arrive at 9.00 to get your bike sorted. \nBring: \n\nWater\n$2.00 cash per garden (we may be visiting up to 6 gardens)\nSunscreen\nSnacks if you want\nA sense of humour and a willingness to go with the flow.\n\nRules: We want to keep it simple\, friendly and rely on everyone’s common sense to keep everyone safe and happy. However\, as the event is open to everyone\, we need to outline a few things in case someone leaves their common sense at home. \n\nWe will collect your name\, email and phone number beforehand. This also speeds up the entry at each garden.\nPlease obey all instructions from the leader. They are volunteers who have the responsibility for the safety of everyone. to consider.\nYou will be introduced to the leaser at the start. Please don’t overtake them. They may be riding slowly for a reason.\nIf you do need to leave the group or decide to do things at your own speed\, you must tell the leader so we don’t waste time searching for you.\nEntry to each garden is $2.00. Please respect the wishes of the garden owners and follow their instructions.\nObey all the road rules. Stop at Stop signs and indicate when turning.\nGive way to everyone on the shared paths\, even if they may be in your way.\nMake sure your bike is in good working order and wear a helmet.\n\nLiability: This is a free event run by volunteers and is held on public roads and pathways. All the organisers are doing is organising a route and guiding you around it. You are ultimately responsible for the safety of yourself and of those around you. We take safety very seriously but accept absolutely no liability for injuries\, accidents\, damage or losses caused by you or others. If you do not agree\, do not attend. We will be carrying a small first aid kit\, and the leader has been trained in first aid. \nFAQ \n\nWhat if it’s raining? It’s summer in Auckland. We get wet\, then it stops raining and we get dry. If it’s forecast to be torrential rain and high winds we will cancel. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for notification in the morning.\nWhat about security for my bike? You will probably be able to walk down the driveway and leave your bike off the road at most gardens. There are helpers at the gardens who will mind the bikes for us. Bring a lock if you are at all concerned. Can I bring my kids? It’s about 20km and some riding on the road\, so if they are small enough to carry them on your bike\, that’s fine\, otherwise it’s probably only suited to kids 13 and over who are experienced at riding on the road.\nI’ve never ridden in a group\, what if I can’t keep up? This is about the experience\, it’s not a race. We will be riding at a slow pace and will stop frequently to make sure everyone stays together and we cross intersections safely. If you do feel unsafe or want to pull out for any reason\, please tell the leader so we don’t look for you.\nWhat if I want to ride fast and see more gardens? No problems\, just tell the leader you are leaving the group so we don’t send out a search party\, and we will tell you our final destination so you can catch up with us there if you want.\nWhat if I love one particular garden and want to spend more time there? We have estimated about 20-25 minutes at each garden\, but if everyone is engrossed\, we will take longer. If one really takes your fancy\, you can tell the ride organiser to take you off the list and you can stay there for as long as you like.\n\nNote: If you can’t make Sunday we will be running a pre-EcoFest event on Saturday too (may be different routes each day). https://events.humanitix.com/bike-the-eastern-bays-sustainable-garden-trail-saturday-edition . \n  \n

You can still join Adopt-A-Drain at \nGoing Green @ The Green on 29 March and at the  Ōrākei Enviro Forum on 19 April \n  \nHave you noticed it rains a lot more lately? SUMMARY:Nursery Volunteer Day at Camp Adair
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what really goes on inside a native plant nursery\, and how tiny seedlings turn into thousands of plants heading back into the landscape? This volunteer day at the Camp Adair native eco-sourced nursery offers a genuine behind-the-scenes look at how restoration plants are grown from seed to site. \nVolunteers will get hands-on with the core nursery tasks that make restoration possible. You might be potting up seedlings\, preparing and handling seed\, or carrying out essential plant care\, all while learning practical tips and tricks used in a working restoration nursery. Along the way\, we’ll share insights into how nursery decisions affect plant survival\, river health\, biodiversity\, and the resilience of the whenua. \nThis is a relaxed\, welcoming day designed to build real skills and confidence\, whether you’re brand new to nursery work or keen to deepen your understanding. You’ll learn why certain methods are used\, what mistakes to avoid\, and how small actions in the nursery have big impacts once plants are back in the ground. Everything you work on directly contributes to local restoration projects\, supporting healthier waterways and ecosystems across the whenua. \nNo experience is needed. All tools\, materials\, and guidance are provided. Please bring a hat\, sunscreen\, covered footwear\, and gloves if you have them.
