SUMMARY:Ngakinga Natural Dye Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Step into the garden and watch plants turn into colour! This workshop takes you from growing and harvesting dye plants\, to mordanting fabric\, to making a dye bath\, and finally transforming fibre into beautiful\, unique hues. \nIt’s playful\, unstructured\, and hands-on—participants are invited to explore\, experiment\, and learn through doing and getting messy. \nWhat You’ll Do\n\n\nHarvest flowers and dye plants from the garden 🌸 \n\n\nPrepare a bubbling\, colourful dye bath together \n\n\nDip\, swirl\, and watch fabric magically change colour 🎨 \n\n\nExplore\, play\, and make one-of-a-kind pieces \n\n\nEvery piece is a surprise—and every participant is an artist! \nFabric\nSome fabric will be supplied\, but you’re welcome to bring your own small-ish piece. \nIf bringing your own: \n\n\nIt must be a natural fibre (cotton\, linen\, silk\, wool\, etc.) \n\n\nOld favourites work perfectly: t-shirts\, tea towels\, or tank tops \n\n\nScour it at home: wash in hot water with soda ash or natural detergent and rinse well \n\n\nPractical Info\n\n\nAll ages welcome 🌱 \n\n\nLocation: Papa ki Awataha | Jessie Tonar Scout Reserve ~ directions here! (end of Kaka Street\, Northcote) \n\n\nThis is all outdoors\, so bring covered shoes\, sun protection\, and a drink bottle \n\n\nCome ready to get your hands colourful and messy! \n\n\n  \nAbout Ngakinga\nArtist Holli McEntegart has collaborated with Charmaine Bailie (Te Uri o Hau – Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara) to grow a natural dye garden on a 200-square-metre site at Papa ki Awataha—the home of the puna that feeds Te Awataha. \nNgakinga is a living sculpture garden\, growing plants chosen for their dyeing magic. Here\, native and introduced species mix\, honouring Indigenous knowledge and celebrating colour-making traditions. \nIt’s a space to gather\, reflect\, and create across seasons—with your feet in the soil\, your hands in flowers\, and your imagination running wild. We explore decolonisation\, ecosystem regeneration\, sustainable practice\, and connection to whenua\, all while turning plants into art. \nAt Northart Gallery\, a parallel installation will feature hand-dyed banners tracing the Inhabit project’s journey through its first three iterations. Find the EcoFest listing for this exhibition here. \n\nNgaHuru Celebration – 29 March\nThe event on the 29th of March will not be a workshop session\, but a lively outdoor celebration of NgaHuru (Autumn). All are welcome to attend\, no booking required. \n  \nThis project is in collaboration with Uru Whakaaro and  is supported by The Tīpuna Project\, Auckland City Council Creative Communities Scheme\,  NORTHART and the Kaipātiki Project. \nWe acknowledge Mana Whenua as the kaitiaki of this land\, and their tūpuna past\, present\, and emerging. 🖤🤍❤️

SUMMARY:MyShinyMadness Urban Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the multi award-winning urban gallery of Lisa Watkins\, better known as MyShinyMadness. \nFor EcoFest 2026\, Lisa opens her own Urban Sustainability Gallery — a rare indoor and outdoor exhibition showcasing a powerful collection of large-scale artworks made entirely from rescued and repurposed materials. \nThese are not small experiments. They are bold\, joyful\, statement works that transform overlooked waste into wonder. Colour\, texture and scale collide to create an experience that is both playful and deeply considered. \nWinner of the Localised Sustainability Art Award and the Waitākere Arts Top Assemblage Award\, and a member of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC)\, Lisa’s practice sits at the forefront of contemporary sustainability-led art in Aotearoa. \nLast year she exhibited at Smales Farm and the Naumi Hotel for EcoFest and World Earth Day. This year\, visitors are invited into her own evolving Urban Sustainability Gallery — an intimate and immersive opportunity to encounter a substantial body of large-scale upcycled work in one place. \nWhether you are a serious art lover\, a curious family\, or someone passionate about circular design\, this exhibition offers a chance to experience joy\, scale and material transformation up close. \nFollowing a year of detailed planning\, Lisa has recently secured council consent and is now actively seeking funding to realise the first sculpture in her long-term legacy project: New Zealand’s first permanent sustainable sculpture trail on public land. This exhibition forms part of that growing vision. \nThe exhibition runs from 22 March to 22 April. \nOpening Day: Sunday 22 March\n11am | 1pm | 3pm \nWednesdays and Saturdays\n11am | 1pm\ 3pm  \nEntry is by gold coin koha (donation on arrival).

SUMMARY:Inhabit Iteration 4: Ngakinga
DESCRIPTION:The Inhabit Project\nNow in its fourth year\, Inhabit is an ongoing public art project that reimagines vacant or underused urban spaces as temporary sites for connection and creative exchange. Exploring how our ecosystems of care have evolved in Aotearoa\, and how we share our experiences. \nThe project features hand-sewn banners that give public voice to the intimate stories woven through it. Made from iconic New Zealand cotton redline nappies\, the banners are naturally dyed with pigments sourced from the artist’s kitchen and garden\, and stitched with participants’ messages in cut-out felt text drawn from conversations during Inhabit Iterations 1 (2022)\, 2 (2023) and 3 (2024). Evolving from a wall of Post-it note reflections\, each note has been transformed into a banner\, collectively forming an immersive\, process-driven installation that continues the dialogue between Inhabit participants and co-creators. \nIteration 4: Ngakinga\nIteration 4: Ngakinga\, is a participatory social sculpture that nurtures interconnectedness\, community collaboration\, and ecosystems of care. Conceived as a living laboratory for taiao\, creativity\, and natural dyeing practices and activated at Papa ki Awataha\, Northcote\, from March 2025 to April 2026. \nArtist Holli McEntegart has collaborated with Charmaine Bailie (Te Uri o Hau – Ngāti Whātua ki Kaipara) to grow a natural dye garden on a 200-square-metre site at Papa ki Awataha—the home of the puna that feeds Te Awataha. The land was bare\, raw\, hard and cracked\, waiting to be nurtured back to its full potential. They are to inhabit here for four seasons\, nourishing the whenua intentionally along its journey to good health and growing natural dye plants to create hand dyed fabric artworks with the community. \nNgakinga is a collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and native and non-native plants to co-create public art\, ritual and other care practices that weave together our diverse ancestral threads while respecting Māori sovereignty\, in honour ultimately of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. As a social sculpture\, this intentionally cultivated space will grow plants and flowers selected for their natural dyeing properties to create textile art. \nThe project invites people to come together on the land—to build community through care\, creativity\, and connection. It is a place to share personal stories and collective reflection with our feet in the soil and our faces in the flowers; a space to make art with natural dye plants through a lens of decolonisation\, sustainability\, and ecosystem restoration as the Northcote town centre undergoes redevelopment. \nThe banners sewn and installed at Ngakinga will be dyed with colour extracted from plants grown throughout the year and embroidered with text telling the story of the garden. At Northart Gallery\, a parallel installation will feature hand-dyed banners tracing the Inhabit project’s journey through its first three iterations. \nNatural Dye Workshops\nThis exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public natural dye workshops that are also part of Ecofest and held in the garden itself throughout March 2026. Find the EcoFest listings for the workshops here. \nWe acknowledge Mana Whenua as the kaitiaki of this land\, and honour their tīpuna\, past\, present\, and emerging. \nNgakinga is developed in collaboration with Uru Whakaaro and supported by The Tīpuna Project\, the Auckland City Council Creative Communities Scheme\, Northart\, and the Kaipātiki Project.
