SUMMARY:World Water Day Photo Competition 2026
DESCRIPTION:Enter our Photo Competition in celebration of World Water Day 2026. This year Te Whau Pathway Environment Trust’s theme is WATER IS LIFE… \nWater shapes everything — our rivers\, our streams\, our ecosystems\, and our communities. Safeguarding the Whau and its waterways means protecting life itself\, now and for the future. Te Whau Pathway is becoming a living example of this care in action — a place where people can see\, experience\, and connect with our body of water every day. \nWorld Water Day is a reminder not to take water for granted. It’s a chance to celebrate it\, value it\, and feel inspired to do something — big or small — to protect it. \nSnap a photo that celebrates the beauty of the Whau environment and helps raise awareness of water quality in our awa. Together\, we can spotlight what we care about\, build community pride\, and back the protection of this special place. \nGrab your phone or camera\, hit the pathway\, and show some love for Te Whau \nTe Whau Pathway is a shared path that will one day connect the Waitematā and Manukau harbours.\nThe pathway will provide the opportunity for amazing recreational choices and safer and more sustainable alternatives for travel. Nurturing a sense of pride\, ownership and kaitiakitanga of the Whau River\, one of the jewels in West Auckland’s crown.\nTe Whau Pathway connecting communities\, nature\, and the awa. \nThis event is proudly supported by the New Zealand Government and Te Whau Pathway Project; Ministry for the Environment and Auckland Council. \nTe Whau Pathway is a shared path that will one day connect between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours.\nThe pathway will provide the opportunity for amazing recreational choices and safer and more sustainable alternatives for travel. SUMMARY:Moth Plant Pod Competition 2026 - Howick
DESCRIPTION:The Howick Moth Plant Competition 2026\, led by Pest Free Howick\, is back for another year — and the community is once again invited to take action for te taiao. \nRunning from 2 March to 8 May 2026\, the competition challenges participants to help control moth plant\, one of Auckland’s most damaging invasive vines. By removing moth plant pods and seedlings\, participants directly protect native plants\, reduce future spread\, and support healthier ecosystems across the Howick area. \nThere are three competition categories: \n\n\nECE – early childhood centres enter as a whole \n\n\nSchools – primary and secondary schools enter as a whole \n\n\nCommunity – open to community teams of up to 10 people \n\n\nParticipants earn points by safely collecting moth plant pods and seedlings\, with all efforts contributing to a collective impact far greater than any one group could achieve alone. Along the way\, competitors learn how to identify moth plant\, understand why it’s a threat\, and see how small actions can lead to meaningful environmental change. \nWith $5\,000 in prizes up for grabs\, the competition is designed to be fun\, educational\, and empowering — turning weed control into a shared challenge that brings people together while making a real difference for native biodiversity in Howick.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenhithe Community Trust at Taihinui Historical Reserve this EcoFest 2026 \nLove tramping off the beaten track and exploring wild bush? This group is made for you. \nBe part of the Friends of Taihinui Historical Reserve group for a morning \nThis volunteer team works along the stunning Hellyers/Oruamo Escarpment\, a mature bush reserve filled with pōhutukawa\, a nikau grove\, pūriri\, giant tanekaha\, coastal kōwhai and more.\nThe trail is informal and rough in places\, so a good level of fitness is needed\, but the rewards are worth it. \nHelp the group free native trees by removing invasive plants along the way: elaeagnus\, woolly nightshade\, moth plant and wild ginger. After several years of mahi\, there’s still more to tackle\, and every session makes a visible difference. \nYour efforts are rewarded with sweeping views of the inner Waitematā Harbour\, peaceful bush surrounds\, and the satisfaction of helping nature thrive right here in Greenhithe. It’s also a great way to build new friendships. \nWhat to bring \nWear sturdy footwear and bring a cold drink.\nLong sleeves and trousers are recommended for working in dense areas. \nConnect with us \nFriends of Taihinui Historical Reserve is a Greenhithe Community Trust initiative.\nFor more information or to join an EcoFest 2026 session\, email gctlouis@gmail.com.
