About this Event
Languages: English, Te Reo Māori
Spend your Saturday morning overlooking the Waitematā Harbour, learning the art of raranga in a welcoming, beginner-friendly environment. These pop-up weaving workshops offer tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau a hands-on introduction to Māori weaving practices during the school holidays, connecting people to te ao Māori, sustainability, and place.
Led by the Te Puāwai Weavers Collective, participants will be guided through a tikanga-led learning journey that begins with whakawhanaungatanga and kōrero on harakeke, whakapapa and whenua. You’ll then learn foundational weaving techniques while creating your own putiputi or harakeke bracelet to take home. All materials are provided and ethically prepared, allowing you to focus on learning, creativity, and connection.
Each workshop centres learning through doing, building confidence rather than perfection, and creates space for shared making, reflection, and meaningful engagement with natural materials. Through this experience, participants gain cultural understanding and confidence, strengthen whānau and community connections, and deepen their relationship to sustainability, kaitiakitanga, and environmental care.
Te Wharekura is a kaupapa Māori learning space in the heart of the city, a place to learn, connect, and reflect, where mahi toi, kōrero tuku iho, and the values of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei are shared with all.
Participants can do 1 or 2 workshops.
Nau mai, haere mai.
