About this Event
Ever wondered what really goes on inside a native plant nursery, and how tiny seedlings turn into thousands of plants heading back into the landscape? This volunteer day at the Camp Adair native eco-sourced nursery offers a genuine behind-the-scenes look at how restoration plants are grown from seed to site.
Volunteers will get hands-on with the core nursery tasks that make restoration possible. You might be potting up seedlings, preparing and handling seed, or carrying out essential plant care, all while learning practical tips and tricks used in a working restoration nursery. Along the way, we’ll share insights into how nursery decisions affect plant survival, river health, biodiversity, and the resilience of the whenua.
This is a relaxed, welcoming day designed to build real skills and confidence, whether you’re brand new to nursery work or keen to deepen your understanding. You’ll learn why certain methods are used, what mistakes to avoid, and how small actions in the nursery have big impacts once plants are back in the ground. Everything you work on directly contributes to local restoration projects, supporting healthier waterways and ecosystems across the whenua.
No experience is needed. All tools, materials, and guidance are provided. Please bring a hat, sunscreen, covered footwear, and gloves if you have them.
