About this Event
Join us for Saturday Stitch-Up, where you’ll learn the basics of sewing while creating eco-friendly scrunchies from repurposed clothing! This hands-on event introduces sustainable sewing practices, reducing fabric waste, and transforming old garments into new treasures.
The day kicks off with a learning session covering:
- Fabric fundamentals – Textiles, structure, and choosing materials
- Sewing machine basics – Types, threading, bobbins, stitches, and tension
- Deconstructing garments – Preparing materials for upcycling
After a lunch break (nibbles provided). Please bring your own lunch.
We’ll then dive into the practical sewing session:
- Choosing and creating your pattern
- Cutting, setting up your machine, and constructing your scrunchie
What to Bring:
- A sewing machine (if available, we have 6 to share)
- An old garment to repurpose (or choose from our fabric stash/ Manurewa Community Recycling Center Free bin)
- Optional: Your own sewing kit (limited supplies provided)
We’ll provide recoupable materials like thread, pins, scissors, and irons. Leave with new sewing skills, a handmade scrunchie, and a fresh perspective on sustainable fashion!
Cost: $10
