About this Event

Looks like night sky, but not in the sky?

Glowworms: Titiwai /Glowworms are some of Aotearoa’s most iconic nighttime residents, their tiny blue-green lights twinkling like stars along streams, in caves, and forest gullies. Known in te reo Māori as titiwai, meaning “lights reflected in water,” these captivating creatures still hold many mysteries for science.

Join us for a relaxed evening chat, where you’ll discover:

  • What glow-worms really are,
  • How their bioluminescence works and,
  • Why their light can look like a starlit sky in the darkness.

Learn about their fascinating life cycle, their Māori name and cultural significance, and hear local stories that celebrate their place in nature.

Get simple tips on how to spot glow-worms safely during your next bush walk or cave trip while helping to protect their delicate habitats.

Enjoy fun facts, photos, and a chance to connect with one of New Zealand’s most enchanting natural wonders.
