About this Event

Kintsugi (also known as Kintsukuroi) which loosely translates to ‘Golden Joinery’ is the age-old Japanese art form of repairing broken ceramics in a way that is often considered more beautiful than when it was when whole. This ancient technique is a true celebration of ‘Wabi Sabi’, the aesthetic appreciation of the broken, old or disregarded.

Yoko is a Japanese Kintsugi technician who has lived in Aotearoa for seven years. She will guide you through this group tutorial and hands-on experience. You will be taken through easy step-by-step instructions on how to piece back together with your broken ceramics with lacquer and gold powder.

All materials to repair your broken pieces will be supplied! Just bring your item to repair. We will also have some broken crockery available for you to choose from.

We are running 2 time slots on the day:

  • OPTION 1: 11 am – 1 pm
  • OPTION 2: 2 pm – 4 pm

Age restriction: 14+

Booking is essential as there are limited spots available! Parking is limited at the site, so we suggest that participants walk, cycle, catch a bus (there is a nearby bus stop), or carpool to the Recovery Park.

This workshop is brought to you by the Island Waste Collective and is part of the “Mend It” March series.

Cost: $90
