Love tramping off the beaten track and exploring wild bush? This group is made for you.
Be part of the Friends of Taihinui Historical Reserve group for a morning
This volunteer team works along the stunning Hellyers/Oruamo Escarpment, a mature bush reserve filled with pōhutukawa, a nikau grove, pūriri, giant tanekaha, coastal kōwhai and more.
The trail is informal and rough in places, so a good level of fitness is needed, but the rewards are worth it.
Help the group free native trees by removing invasive plants along the way: elaeagnus, woolly nightshade, moth plant and wild ginger. After several years of mahi, there’s still more to tackle, and every session makes a visible difference.
Your efforts are rewarded with sweeping views of the inner Waitematā Harbour, peaceful bush surrounds, and the satisfaction of helping nature thrive right here in Greenhithe. It’s also a great way to build new friendships.
What to bring
Wear sturdy footwear and bring a cold drink.
Long sleeves and trousers are recommended for working in dense areas.
